About Dr. Phillips, FloridaDr Phillips Logo.jpg

Dr Phillips is an unincorporated suburb located in Southwest Orlando and is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area.  This area is named after Dr. Phillip Phillips.  Dr. Phillips owned thousands of acres of citrus groves across Central Florida and was responsible for several innovations in the processing and packaging of orange juice.  His long range plans for his grove operations included the development of a community where people would work, live and play.  With the unionization of the citrus industry after World War II, Dr. Phillips decided to sell his citrus holdings in 1954.  Nonetheless, he  retained the undeveloped land in southwest Orange County.  In the late 1960’s, Howard Phillips, son of Dr. Phillips, built off of his father’s previous vision for the development of a community.  Howard worked with a world renown land planning firm to develop a master plan for the 18-square mile area now known as Dr. Phillips.  The plan was presented to the Orange County Commission in 1969 and the Dr. Phillips community had the distinction of being the first master-planned community in Central Florida.

Dr. Phillips is popular for “Restaurant Row”, a commercial area that encompasses a two mile stretch along Sand Lake Road that features over 50 food and beverage establishments, a multitude of shopping venues, professional offices and high density dwellings.  Neighborhoods or sub-divisions were built around this central area.

On January 27, 2007, Sand Lake Hospital was renamed Dr. P. Civic

Dr. Phillips greatest legacy was the culmination of the Dr. Philips Charities: The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation and Dr. Phillips Inc.  These two distinct charities are responsible for funding grant support that built the fire station, established a water and sewer system, and built and operated a water plant.  Dr. Phillips Charities also built a library facility for the benefit of the community which is leased to the Orange County Library System.  In addition, Dr. Phillips Charities made land available for parks and a family recreational complex (YMCA and Little League). Various religious denominations were provided support and encouraged to establish a presence in the area. Land also was made available to Orlando Regional Healthcare System (now known as Orlando Health) to establish a hospital, which recently was renamed The Dr. P. Phillips Hospital.
